The second wave of COVID-19 has left us with no choice but to watch our steps and not tread on waters that can bring down our immunity at any cost. The scientific name for ginger is Zingiber officinale. Widely used in Indian kitchens to alleviate upset stomach, ginger has properties to relieve muscular and joint pains. MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) – A federally published study show high levels of physical activity is linked with improved vaccine responses in older adults, so could what we eat and how we exercise help improve how our immunity responds to the COVID-19 vaccine?

Experts say it’s no secret that exercise improves immune function, and they say you don’t have to do too much to reap the benefits.

“The concept essentially is to simply get your heart rate up higher than if you were sitting down, so that can simply be a brisk walk,” says Nicole Kerneen, a registered and certified dietitian and personal trainer at Way of Life Nutrition and Fitness.

Registered dietitians say your immune system will see a boost with consistent light exercise. If you don’t exercise regularly but do decide to prior to getting a vaccine, Kerneen says there are still some benefits.

“You’ll have a lot more circulation happening, you also have all of the immune receptors really alert and so that in turn can essentially help,” she adds.

Experts say some sort of upper body movement after getting a vaccine, isn’t a bad idea either.

“Post-vaccination, if you’re able to and feeling well enough of course without stressing the body too much, engage in some light activity. That can actually promote circulation which can support our immune system’s response” said Cassie Vanderwall, a clinical nutritionist at UW Health

“As simple as with no weight at all and you’re just moving your arm up and down, you’re stretching it and allowing it to move,” Kerneen adds.

Vanderwall says certain foods can also cause inflammation, which affects immune response.

“High sugary processed foods, those are pro-inflammatory, meaning they’re going to light the fire, we’re actually looking for foods that are going to put out or calm down the fire,” she says.

Kerneen says when it comes to improving immunity with food, consistency is key, but eating something unhealthy every once in a while, is still okay. Dieticians suggest foods like leafy green vegetables, berries, citrus, garlic and onions.

“Those things are incredible for your body and for your immune system and to decrease inflammation,” says Kerneen.

“Salmon or walnuts, nuts and seeds. A meal composed of those items post-vaccine, pre-vaccine or every day is really going to help,” Vanderwall said.

On top of diet and exercise, experts say good rest and hydration can also provide good circulation before and after you get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Jackson’s YMCA has been busy planning for their expansion and creation of the new Downtown Healthy Living Campus. Monday they announced they had secured four properties in downtown Jackson. These properties are all adjacent to their current facility. They plan to expand their operation on what is now a combined 3.5 acres of land that they purchased. They have created a lot of room to grow their footprint.

The new building would be constructed on the northeast corner of the current parking lot. Once the new facility is built, the current building would be demolished and that land will be turned into a parking lot. The Jackson YMCA has raised almost 22 million dollars towards this project.

Jackson YMCA CEO Shawna Tello praised the Jackson families and organizations involved in the transactions for supporting the Y’s mission and seeing the potential in its capital project. “When we met with our neighbors, they were very supportive of our plans to expand our impact and work collaboratively,” said Tello. “Each property owner, once we shared our vision with them, embraced the idea and made the transactions as smooth as possible.”

The “Y” will continue communications with their donation partners, as additional funding will be needed to close gaps in their construction budget. This project will bring a new state of the art YMCA to downtown Jackson upon completion. People need affordable, safe and clean facilities to work out in. The YMCA also offers many different programs for all members of your family.

Healthy, young volunteers who have previously had COVID-19 will be deliberately exposed to coronavirus for a second time to see how the immune system responds, as part of a new U.K. study.

Researchers at the University of Oxford on Monday launched the “human challenge” trial to investigate what happens when volunteers who have recovered from the coronavirus disease are then reinfected with the virus a second time.

The study, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust, is expected to start in the next few weeks after receiving ethics approval, and could help accelerate the development of new treatments and vaccines against the disease.

Human challenge studies have played a crucial role in the development of treatments for a number of diseases, including malaria, typhoid, cholera and flu.

“A challenge study allows us to make these measurements very precisely because we know exactly when someone is infected,” said Helen McShane, professor of vaccinology at the department of pediatrics at the University of Oxford and chief investigator on the study.

“The information from this work will allow us to design better vaccines and treatments, and also to understand if people are protected after having COVID, and for how long,” McShane said.

The first stage of the trial will involve up to 64 volunteers aged 18-30 who have previously been naturally infected with COVID-19. It will look to establish the lowest dose of virus that can take hold and start replicating in about 50% of participants, while producing few to no symptoms.

Volunteers will be monitored in a safe, controlled environment while quarantined in a specially designed hospital suite for a minimum of 17 days. Anyone who develops coronavirus symptoms will be given Regeneron

monoclonal antibody treatment.

Once the standard dose is established, it will be used to infect different volunteers in the second stage of the trial, which is due to start in the summer. The full length of the study will be 12 months, including a minimum of eight follow-up appointments after volunteers have been discharged.

The new study is different to a parallel one led by Imperial College London, which was announced in February, and will expose up to 90 carefully selected healthy adult volunteers to coronavirus to help researchers understand how the virus infects people and how it is transmitted.

It comes as almost 10 million people in the U.K. have now received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest government figures.

Three vaccines are currently in use in the U.K.: the one jointly developed by German biotech BioNTech

and U.S. drug company Pfizer

; the one produced by drug company AstraZeneca with the University of Oxford; and the shot from biotech Moderna

Last week, Moderna said it would deliver fewer than expected COVID-19 vaccines to the U.K., Canada and other countries, following a shortfall in production in its European supply chain.

Covid cases are on the rise every day. It pains when you see your loved ones testing positive, and because there is nothing much that you can do, you need to hold your ground strongly. Today, we are all back to square one. Staying at home, not stepping out unless urgent, and working on building our immunity are the only factors that can help us in this fight.

The headquarter of our immune system is our gut. The happier our gut bacteria is, the stronger our immune system gets. And do you know the favourite food of your gut bacteria? It’s fiber! When we eat more soluble fiber, the gut flora is diversified. It’s the body’s ability to fend off infections increases.

Millets are not only good sources of fiber, multi-vitamins, essential minerals, proteins, but they are also rich in phytochemicals — something that will give you enough antioxidants to fight free radicals. In my six-week millet online workshop, I not only focus on giving millet recipes and live videos, but also conduct various complimentary sessions, where we understand more on lacto-fermentation, sourdough, improvisations with fermented porridge, taking care of cast iron pans, making your own kitchen enzyme, and most importantly, gut health and immunity.

Today’s recipe is simple, but it promises to make your gut bacteria happier with good fiber and loads of antioxidants. I have been experimenting and talking a lot about dosas. Read more for the step-by-step recipe of beetroot little millet dosai and how each ingredient is meant to boost your immunity and overall health.

Little millet beetroot dosa 


  • 1 cup little millet
  • ½ cup whole green gram (moong)
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • Rock salt to taste
  • For toppings: beetroot, curry leaves and bell peppers
  • Mint and amla (Indian gooseberry) chutney


  1. Thoroughly wash and soak little millet for 6-8 hours.
  2. Thoroughly wash and soak moong dal for 6-8 hours.
  3. Soak methi (fenugreek) seeds.
  4. Make a fine batter of millet, dal, methi seeds and ginger. Allow it to ferment for 7-8 hours.
  5. Once the batter is fermented, add salt.
  6. Refer to the video attached. Here I have used all bright coloured veggies. You can use whatever is available in your region.
  7. I used homemade Cajun Spice to enhance the flavours. You can use dry chutneys (podis) of your choice.
  8. Serve hot with your favourite dip or chutney.

Please note:

  1. The mint and alma chutney is simple. Here, I add loads of mint, Indian gooseberries (amla), dry pomegranate seeds, green chilies, asafoetida (heeng) and black salt. Everything to give you fiber and vitamin C.
  2. You can substitute little millet with any other positive grain. I help my students customise recipes as per their protocols to get maximum benefit.
  3. Try to consume the batter within 1-2 days. It’s always good to have one millet for at least two days.

Boost your immunity with little millet, moong dal, beetroot and amla

Millets play an important role in maintaining our gut health as they contain soluble fiber and are also rich in micronutrients like iron, zinc, selenium, which help in building immunity. Please note: kodo and little millets have high dietary fiber, highest among positive grains.

The presence of iron in moong dal beans can amplify your immunity level and make your system as strong as a rock. It can stimulate the count of white blood cells in the body. Intake of moong dal can make you more powerful and help fight infections easily.

Rich in iron and vitamin C, beetroots can help to create healthy red blood cells in the body and battle against infections. Beetroot helps promote gut health by improving good bacteria quantity. It is also rich in vitamin C. These properties contribute to a healthy immune system.

Amla (Indian gooseberry) has been long used to relieve symptoms of cough and cold, which often lead to chest congestion. Vitamin C in amla also improves immunity.

In a move that highlights the innovation opportunity for the food industry in the healthy ageing category, the organisation has launched a new resource to inform older adults, who may be experiencing low appetite or finding it hard to eat well, about what to eat to get all the vitamins and minerals needed to support a healthy immune system.

As we age, our immune system begins to work less effectively, making us more susceptible to diseases and infections, such as colds, flu and pneumonia, the BNF said. This, combined with a loss of interest in food and poorer appetite that may occur in later life, can make it harder to eat well and get all the nutrients needed for good health.

The new British Nutrition Foundation resource profiles 10 key nutrients the body needs throughout later life to support the immune system and provides handy hints on the foods that can provide these vitamins and minerals.

According to the BNF, some examples of important nutrients and where to find them include:

  • Vitamin A; which can be found in foods such as eggs, cheese and liver. Soups that are made from vegetables, such as butternut squash, sweet potato or carrots can also be delicious providers of beta carotene that the body converts to Vitamin A.
  • Vitamin B6; can be found in poultry, fish (for example canned tuna) and in some fruit and vegetables, such as bananas and avocados.
  • Vitamin C; can be found in citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit, as well as vegetables, such as cabbage, peppers and tomatoes. Serving a meal with a portion of green cabbage and a portion of cauliflower will provide you with all the vitamin C needed for the day.
  • Vitamin D; can be found in oily fish like canned sardines and salmon. However, our main source of vitamin D is sunlight, not food, and it is recommended that we take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D between October and early March when sunshine is limited, or all year round for people who are not able to get outdoors that often.
  • Copper; which can be found in wholegrain breakfast cereals, pasta and quinoa. Adding pulses to dishes such as stews and curries can provide a great source of copper too.
