S.I. rapper launches fresh juice business amid coronavirus outbreak

  • August 6, 2020

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Caitlin Hawkins, known as Prema777 in the music world, needed to find a way to make a living when the coronavirus (COVID-19) forced a global lockdown.

Soon after the New Springville resident learned how the virus was affecting those with underlying health conditions, Hawkins, who is the mother of a 1-year-old son and is pregnant with her second child, said she wanted to come up with a way to keep people healthy.

And with her music on hold due to the health crisis, she said was looking for a way to earn money.

That’s when Hawkins — known for her poetic and melodic style of rap music, and her latest album, “Take Flight,” recorded at the North Shore studio House of Dreams in Clifton — created imunaTea, a fresh juice delivery service.

“I call it imunaTea because I started it with the intent of helping people build their immune system through the pandemic. …My intention is to build something for myself and my family by helping others and giving back to the community. Health is wealth and should be affordable and accessible for everyone,” said Hawkins, who has formerly worked in the hospitality industry as a server and bartender.

A CREATIVE OUTLET

While music is her first outlet for creativity, she said her new business is also one that allows her to create something that can help others.

“Music is my therapy and first love. … I love rapping and I love performing ….Music has gotten me through challenging times and always inspires me to reinvent. I heal and help through music, and now it’s just about expanding that same concept through my juicing creativity,” said Hawkins.

“When you take care of yourself, you feel good. And when you help other people, it’s inspiring. That’s what I get from my music; I want to help people. Ultimately, my goal is to send a message to people to give them hope,” she added.

With a second child due in October, Hawkins said she wants to take the time to set a “good intention,” and build a business for which she could be proud.

“I’m a mother and business women who always wants to be busy,” she said. “I want to show my children that you have to work during hard times…. Plus, the business was one I could do with my son. I could put a mask on and use hand sanitizer, and put him in the car and make my deliveries.”

THE JUICES

Hawkins said she focuses on three main juices:

Energy-boosting shot: Made of a turmeric, ginger, orange and black pepper. “Turmeric has an immense amount of healing properties in it. It’s an anti-inflammatory. It fights diseases,” Hawkins explained. “These shots make you feel fresh and are great to start your day.”

Boost juice: A beverage made of orange, lemon, carrot, green apple, turmeric and ginger. “This is a tasty drink to make you feel good and to boost your immune system,” said Hawkins. “It’s like a super fresh orange juice with a little bit of earthiness to it.”

Teatox: “This is a green juice,” she said, noting it’s made of greens, cucumber, honeydew, green apple and Greek yogurt.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY

Hawkins said her long-term goal is to build an “imunaTea community.”

“I’d like to create a space that inspires success stories in exchange for free knowledge on holistic and homeopathy remedies. Anyone and everyone will be welcome to join,” she said.

Immunity claims proliferate in new product launches | 2020-07-30

  • July 30, 2020

ARNHEM, THE NETHERLANDS — Products carrying an immunity claim, already on the rise before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, have continued picking up steam.

“From 2015 to 2019 … you’re looking at almost a doubling of new product innovation globally for food and beverage launches with an immune health claim,” said Tom Vierhile, vice president of strategic insights, North America, at Innova Market Insights. “You’re also seeing more products directly reference immunity or the immune system right on the font of product packaging.”

Two-thirds of millennials and a third of baby boomers said they were increasing their consumption of functional food and beverage products in 2019, Mr. Vierhile said. Those numbers have shifted in recent months, with around half of consumers worldwide consuming more immunity-boosting products after the onset of the pandemic.

Four Sigmatic chaga mushroom beverage mixImmunity has been a focus in dairy innovation, Mr. Vierhile said.

“Dairy products are definitely benefiting from the fact that many contain probiotics, especially items like yogurt,” he said.

An example is the recently launched fermented buttermilk with strawberries from Farmi Piimatoostus Ltd., an Estonian dairy company. The product features vitamins B6 and B12, which contribute to immune and nervous system performance, and Selenium, a mineral that protects cells from oxidative stress.

Hot drinks, especially tea, have emerged as another key area of new product innovation.

“The reason tea is trending is that many tea products, especially herbal tea products, contain ingredients that may be high in nutrients like vitamin C, maybe orange peel and other ingredients like ginger,” Mr. Vierhile said.

Examples include the new Chaga mushroom drink mix from Los Angeles-based Four Sigmatic. The drink mix features Chaga mushrooms, which offer a host of antioxidant properties to support the immune system and overall health, along with Rose Hip, which is high in vitamin C.

once upon a farm dairy-free smoothiesImmunity also is trending in plant-based products. The number of new launches carrying both a plant-based and an immunity claim nearly tripled between 2015 and 2019, according to Innova Market Insights.

“You’re seeing companies being more forthcoming about the fact that their products are plant based,” Mr. Vierhile said. “You’re seeing references to plant-based content and plant-based ingredients right on the front of the packaging.”

An example is new dairy-free smoothies from Once Upon A Farm, Berkeley, Calif., which contain added probiotics for gut and immune health.

What’s next for immunity

Future directions for immune health may include CBD and foodservice, Mr. Vierhile said.

“We’re seeing a lot of new opportunities for innovation when it comes to immune health products, and CBD is one area that’s beginning to break out a little bit,” he said.

Innovation has focused on combining CBD with other compounds and minerals to promote a variety of health benefits. Vancouver-based BevCanna recently launched Lev, a line of fruit-forward CBD-infused sparkling spring waters. The products contain a fulvic and humic mineral formulation that promotes immune system health. Other benefits include improved cognitive function, metabolism support and digestive health.

BevCanna Lev CBD sparkling water“Foodservice is definitely not the first place you look for new immunity product innovation, but that may be changing,” Mr. Vierhile said.

The Kerry Group, Tralee, Ireland, is exploring adding functional ingredients to the foodservice sector with GanedenBC30, a natural probiotic ingredient that provides beneficial bacteria known to support the digestive and immune systems.

“That particular ingredient is especially resistant to extremes of heat, cold and pressure, which enables it to be used in a broad range of products, including pizza, coffee and all kinds of food and beverage products,” Mr. Vierhile said. “The idea is that it can be used as an ingredient for everyday products that consumers may be purchasing at fast-food outlets or white tablecloth restaurants.”

Personalized nutrition may be another area ripe for innovation. Santa Monica, Calif.-based Vejo recently launched a portable blender designed for customized functional beverages. The pod-based system delivers doctor-formulated nutrition blends tackling issues like immunity, stress reduction and sleep.

Another customized beverage tool is NesQino from Nestle China, Beijing, which launched in April. The product allows consumers to create a variety of nutritionist-designed smoothies, oat shakes and milkshakes. One variety is Glowing Shield, an immunity blend featuring mango, carrot and acerola cherries.

“You have the option of having a cold drink or a hot beverage to create kind of a customized superfood product,” Mr. Vierhile said. “There are many different formulations that consumers can enjoy with this particular item. It’s one to watch.”

Moderna, Pfizer begin Covid-19 vaccine trials, eye year-end launches

  • July 28, 2020

German biotech BioNTech and US drugmaker Inc said on Monday they would begin a pivotal global study to evaluate their lead Covid-19 vaccine candidate.

If the study is successful, the companies could submit the vaccine for regulatory approval as early as October, putting them on track to supply up to 100 million doses by the end of 2020 and 1.3 billion by the end of 2021.

Patients are each given two doses of the drugmakers’ vaccine to help boost immunity, so the first 100 million doses would vaccinate around 50 million people.

The study is expected to include about 120 sites globally and could include up to 30,000 participants. It will include regions heavily impacted by Covid-19.

“The initiation of the Phase 2/3 trial is a major step forward in our progress toward providing a potential vaccine to help fight the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic,” said Kathrin Jansen, head of vaccine research and development at

The trial hones in on Pfizer’s most promising vaccine candidate, which it calls BNT162b2. Earlier studies filtered out other potential vaccines.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca’s experimental vaccine has entered the final stage of clinical trials.

already has an agreement to sell 100 million doses of its vaccine to the US government and give it the option to buy 500 million more. It is in talks with other governments, including the European Union, about similar deals.

Over 150 vaccines are being developed against Covid-19, which has claimed nearly 650,000 lives globally and crippled economies.

The vaccine utilizes chemical messenger RNA to mimic the surface of the and teach the immune system to recognize and neutralize it. Although the technology has been around for years, there has never been an approved messenger RNA (mRNA)vaccine.

Moderna Inc and Pfizer Inc launched two 30,000-subject trials of Covid-19 vaccines that could clear the way for regulatory approval and widespread use by the end of this year, the companies said on Monday.

The trials, both announced on Monday, are the first late-stage studies supported by the Trump administration’s effort to speed development of measures against the novel coronavirus, adding to hope that an effective vaccine will help end the pandemic.

Moderna stock rose 9%. Pfizer shares rose 1.6% in afterhours trade and its partner BioNTech, which developed the vaccine, rose 4.2%.

Both vaccine candidates rely on a new technology that allows for faster development and manufacturing than traditional vaccine production methods but does not have an extensive track record.

Moama Bakery launches new immune-system-boosting aloe vera bread

Moama Bakery launches new immune-system-boosting aloe vera bread

  • July 27, 2020

On Tuesday morning Moama Bakery will start selling its newest, first of its kind, immune-boosting aloe bread.

The new loaf’s secret ingredient is aloe vera juice, harvested on farms in nearby Numurkah and Cobram.

Moama Bakery owner Dave Wegener said the aloe bread tasted “just like white bread” and had already won over the bakery’s fussiest customers — children.

“Everyone loves white bread. It is king in-store, it sells out all other breads 2 to 1,” Mr Wegener said.

“We’ll start with a limited amount in each of our three stores, but hopefully it sells out and we can start baking more of it. People are welcome to pre-order as well.”

Mr Wegener was convinced to give the aloe bread a shot by Torrumbarry’s colorful cookers Jodie-Anne and Mick Barlow, from the fledgling cooking show Champagne Food on a Beer Budget.

“It’s awesome that they’ve come to me with this idea,” Mr Wegener said.

“When they brought the bread to me, what stood out was the vitamin D content. Not a lot of foods have vitamin D in them and I know how important it is for the immune system.”

Vitamin D is a notoriously difficult vitamin to acquire, especially for those who are housebound, elderly, on a vegan diet, or with dark skin.

The Barlows became aloe vera believers after a series of health issues among their own circle of family and friends were solved or lessened by introducing aloe vera into their diets.

“A friend introduced it to me. She has a 10-year-old son with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and they wanted to put him on steroids but she decided to look for other, gentler, options first,” Mrs Barlow said.

The results were so positive the friend encouraged Mrs Barlow to pass the aloe vera trick onto her own mother, who went on to get her first perfect bill of health in years, according to Mrs Barlow.

“We are also interested to see if people who normally struggle to digest white bread can eat this without getting upset stomachs,” she said.

Mr Barlow said the aloe bread was a great example of local produce being utilised, with the juice coming from Aloe Vera of Australia, which started in Victoria 43 years ago and grows most of its aloe vera in the neighboring Moira Shire.

“We saw the juice was extracted using high temperatures which meant we could use it in cooking and not lose the health benefits,” Mr Barlow said.

Aloe Vera of Australia founder Jennifer McDougall said she was aware of the aloe bread being baked in Echuca-Moama and, unsurprisingly, fully endorsed the many health benefits of aloe vera.

Aloe vera sap is commonly used on burns, insect stings and its juice consumed to improve digestion.

The bread will be available in Moama Bakery stores across the twin-towns Tuesday morning and is expected to sell for $7 a loaf.

A new public transit option, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), could soon be coming to Phoenix, and the Phoenix Public Transit Department invites you to check out a newly-created video and a virtual meeting at phoenix.gov/brt to learn all about it.

BRT, one of the high-capacity transit components of the voter-approved Transportation 2050 (T2050) program, operates throughout the day on major roads with a focus on improved speed, reliability and convenience.

Some of the elements found in other city BRT systems include enhanced stations, custom buses, advanced fare collection, dedicated lanes, and transit improvements such as transit signal priority.

The phoenix.gov/brt page will be continually updated with ways you can participate in the program’s development. Visit the page and you’ll find various items have been added, including:

  • An illustrated BRT video
  • A virtual meeting site where you can listen to the virtual BRT presentation that describes elements and corridors being considered
  • A survey where you can provide feedback about the future BRT system
  • A downloadable fact sheet you can share with other community members

The survey is especially critical, as the team needs your input on where BRT corridors could be established and what amenities BRT should include. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete, so check it out today.

Over the next several months, the BRT team will present to stakeholders, committees and neighborhood groups. If you are part of an organization that would like the team to present in your next virtual meeting, connect with us by visiting the page.

About Transportation 2050: In Aug. 2015, Phoenix voters approved Transportation 2050 (T2050), a 35-year citywide transportation plan. T2050 is overseen by the Citizens Transportation Commission and includes improved frequency on local bus service, new light rail service and stations and major street improvement projects. Funding for T2050 comes from a 7/10ths of a cent city sales tax that started Jan. 1, 2016. Over the life of the plan, the funds are estimated to generate about $16.7 billion, or more than half of the plan’s overall cost. There will be an additional $14.8 billion in federal and county funds, passenger fares and other sources.

Omni Bev Launches Coconut Matcha Cold Brew Coffee Beverage

  • July 21, 2020

SAN JOSE, Calif.– Omni Bev, the world’s first, authentic Vietnamese Cold Brew Coffee, announced it’s newest, one-of-a-kind flavor, the Vietnamese Coconut Matcha Cold Brew Coffee, a plant-based cold brew with a delicate blend of premium Japanese matcha and a splash of coconut milk. Coconut Matcha is 100 percent plant-based and the first of it’s kind to hit the beverage market. Omni Bev will officially unveil the new flavor at the ECRM Beverage Program, held virtually from July 29 to July 31, 2020.

“Omni Bev was founded with the passion to transcend Vietnamese coffee and share it with the world by elevating quality, and creating healthy, innovative flavors which is why we’ve created the new Coconut Matcha flavor and continue to innovate,” said Tammy Huynh, CEO, and founder of Omni Bev. “It all started with a childhood memory of Vietnam. Watching my father wait patiently for his hot coffee dripping slowly into a glass over a spoonful layer of condensed milk. My mother would forbid, but my father occasionally sneaks me a sip that would turn into a lifelong passion. We are reimagining what that means to us but is committed to preserving generations of coffee tradition, combined with modern brewing science to achieve a high quality Vietnamese cold brew that tastes like home.”

The ECRM Beverage Program is one of the first fully virtual events of its kind that facilitates product discovery, category development and planning while celebrating some of the best creations. Each supplier gets to virtually present their innovations at the event where Omni will be presenting the new Coconut Matcha Vietnamese Cold Brew Coffee.

Omni’s plant-based Coconut Matcha Cold Brew Coffee is dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, ultra-smooth and low in calories. What makes the Coconut Matcha so health-conscious is the matcha, which is a great source of antioxidants, energy and is known to boost metabolism and heart health. The matcha is paired perfectly with coconut milk, filled with good fats and packed with vitamins known to stimulate weight loss, lower cholesterol, and boost the immune system.

Omni Bev starts at the root, with their family farm in Da Lat, Vietnam, where the beans are responsibly grown in high-altitude microclimates producing dense coffee beans with richer, more bold flavor profiles. Due to the diversity of the topography, coffee growers there are able to produce a large number of unique multi-origin blends not found anywhere else in the world. From farm to bottle, Omni Bev’s imported premium Vietnamese coffee beans are brewed and bottled in California. Through Omni’s own innovative process, the beans are steeped in cold water for hours and brewed in small batches to guarantee freshness and consistency.

From the beginning, Omni’s mission has been to educate and transcend authentic Vietnamese coffee. The goal is to elevate quality, build transparency, and create unparalleled flavors. Omni does this by combining the tradition of highly caffeinated Vietnamese coffee with modern brewing science to deliver the first authentic Vietnamese cold brew coffee. The result is a dynamic cup of Vietnamese coffee that features the well-known bite of centuries old practice with a modern twist.

About Omni Bev

Omni Bev is the world’s first authentic Vietnamese Cold Brew Coffee, harvested directly from Dalat, Vietnam and brewed in sunny California. Omni is passionate about sharing its coffee with the world and promises to breathe new vitality with each sip of its traditional Vietnamese cold brew coffee by elevating equality, building transparency and creating unique flavors. Michigan Company Launches Dissolvable CBD Tablets

A company southwest of Jackson is offering CBD tablets, joining companies that advertise CBD as a natural immune booster with few side effects and an alternative to traditional medicines and supplements.

Renewsha in Hanover is among the CBD products hitting the market that claims to support immune system health for those who take it as a daily supplement. The dissolvable 30mg tablet is a patent-pending formula that claims to boost immune-health by supporting inflammation relief.

Producer Anewsha Nutraceuticals uses a certified third-party laboratory testing facility regulated by the state of Michigan to test quality and certify every batch formula. The Renewsha formula includes 100 percent hemp extract CBD while leaving out THC, eliminating the possibility for psychoactive effects.

“Renewsha represents a whole new way to take CBD and experience its unique benefits,” says Nic Hohne, a Renewsha distribution partner. “Instead of guessing how much oil is in a dropper or where an edible came from with a nasty aftertaste that burns, Renewsha makes CBD consumption safer and more enjoyable while producing faster results.”

CBD supplements and oils are marketed as all-natural immuno-supportive options, despite limited peer-reviewed science. Early research studies done on CBD and its effects on the body have acknowledged possible benefits as a result of taking the product, according to Renewsha.

Based on information from early studies, CBD has the ability to reduce inflammation. Anecdotally, it has been reported to minimize anxiety, relax nerve pain, and improve sleep quality.

Some people living with conditions such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis have shared a preference for taking CBD as opposed to traditional medications, according to Renewsha.

Carefully crafted using the finest quality and sustainably sourced ingredients, Ohso offers ‘chocolate-lovers’ a low-calorie, portion-controlled way to enjoy their daily dose of Belgian chocolate. Each pack contains x7 (13.5g) individually wrapped bars which are microencapsulated with over a billion live cultures (commonly known as probiotics) to boost gut health.

Ohso’s range of gut-friendly chocolate bars on the Ocado platform include: Dark (54% cocoa); Orange (54% cocoa); Dark No-Added Sugar (70% cocoa); Raspberry No Added-Sugar (70% cocoa). All products are suitable for vegetarians, gluten-free, nut safe with no added dairy.

Studies have shown that probiotics help to balance the friendly bacteria in the gut which promotes digestive health and boosts the immune system.

Andrew Marten, founder of Ohso said: “At Ohso, we’re passionate about offering our consumers delicious, high-quality chocolate that can be enjoyed in a healthy way whilst boosting their digestive health! Following a rise in demand, we’re thrilled that such a prominent online grocery retailer like Ocado will be stocking the Ohso range.”

Marten told ConfectioneryNews the launch into Ocado is part of Ohso’s wider retail strategy designed to reach out to a large audience of consumers who are increasingly interested in making healthier choices for their lifestyle.
